Course Information

Catalog Course Description
The structures of the Milky Way starting from the solar system: the sun and the planets. Stars and star clusters. How does a star shine - stellar structure and evolution. End points of stellar evolution - black holes, white dwarfs and neutron stars. Methods of observation across the electromagnetic spectrum. Satellite observatories and space research.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the physical principles that govern the motions of the planets and the stellar systems.
2. Define the basic properties of electromagnetic radiation and spectrum.
3. Explain the basic radiation mechanism of stars.
4. Describe the methods of distance, velocity, mass and radius measurements of stars.
5. Explain the formation and evolution of stars.
6. Describe the formation of the elements inside the stars.
7. Discuss formation and properties of the end products of stellar evolution: White dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes.
