Catalog Course Description
The physical and chemical properties and reactions of organic compounds such as saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols and carboxylic acids.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Draw Lewis structures and resonance structures.
2. Write and interpret structural formulas.
3. Predict 3D structure of molecules using the VSEPR model and molecular orbital theory
4. Recognize major functional groups
5. Understand the correlation between properties of functional groups and intermolecular forces
6. Classify molecules as acids and bases
7. Show the mechanisms of basic organic reactions using curved arrow notation.
8. Name simple organic molecules according to the IUPAC law
9. Compare the relative energies of organic molecules using conformational analysis
10. Understand basics of stereochemistry
11. Understand basics of organic reaction mechanisms such as SN1/SN2, E1/E2
12. Describe the interplay of the conditions that can promote SN1/SN2, E1/E2 reactions
13. Plan the synthesis of basic organic molecules using starting materials
