Course Information

Catalog Course Description
Thermodynamic foundations of phase equilibrium in component gaseous, liquid and solid systems will be established. Techniques for determining phase equilibrium diagrams will be introduced. Then the course treats two component systems and their phase diagrams started with the iron carbon phase system. The last portion of the course is devoted to tertiary and more component systems.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Define the importance of phase diagrams in materials science and engineering
2. Explain the main definitions and terms of phase diagram
3. Interpret in which conditions materials are stable in the unary systems by using pressure and temperature diagram.
4. Compose binary systems by using unary systems
5. Solve problems in binary systems by using composition and temperature diagram.
6. Compose ternary systems by using binary systems.
7. Solve problems in ternary systems by using composition diagram and temperature diagram
8.
