Catalog Course Description
The course is a series of introductory level lectures describing the types of ceramic materials ranging from oxide carbides. The crystalline structure of common ceramics and the amorphous nature of glass will be introduced. Surfaces, interfaces, grain boundaries and other structural imperfections in ceramics will be discussed Microstructural development will be treated in the light of ceramic phase diagrams, phase transformations, and chemical reactions with and between solids, grain growth, sintering and vitrification.Thermal, optical, mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties of different ceramics will be discussed.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the structure of (perfect) standard crystalline materials and amorphous materials both qualitatively and quantitatively
2. Describe the defect type and concentration in a real crystal using Kroeger-Vink notation in defect equilibria equations
3. Summarize the mobility of defects with variation in temperature and pressure using Brouwer Diagrams
4. Relate the structure of inorganic materials to their physical properties and vice versa
