Catalog Course Description
Statistical ensembles. Statistical explanation of the principles of thermodynamics. Fluctuations. Applications to the ideal gas, monatomic crystals, ideal gas mixtures. The statistics of the polymer chain. Theory of solutions. Polymer solutions. Binding and aggregation with applications to problems in biotechnology. Introduction to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

1. Apply basic probability concepts in statistical mechanics
2. Evaluate statistical description of systems of particles
3. Summarize statistical basis of thermodynamics
4. Perform calculations using basic methods of statistical mechanics
5. Distinguish quantum statistics of ideal gases
