Course Information
Catalog Course Description
This course examines the structure, thermodynamics, and properties of surfaces and interfaces, followed by the engineering methods used to modify and control these surfaces for functional performance in technological systems. The course emphasizes both surface science and engineering design, linking surface phenomena to real-world applications in energy, electronics, tribology, and materials processing.
Learning Outcomes:
| 1. | Describe the atomic and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces |
|---|---|
| 2. | Apply thermodynamic and kinetic models to surface processes such as adsorption and diffusion |
| 3. | Explain how molecular interactions determine surface properties |
| 4. | Evaluate and design surface modification techniques for mechanical, optical, and electronic performance |
| 5. | Integrate surface science concepts into engineering applications such as catalysis, coatings, corrosion prevention, and energy systems |
| 6. | Demonstrate the use of modern surface characterization tools for analysis and diagnostics |
Course Objective
To introduce different types of surfaces and chemical and physical mechanisms active on these surfaces relevant to current research problems.
