Course Information

Catalog Course Description
Symmetry in quantum mechanics, perturbation theory, identical particles, scattering theory, second quantization.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon completion of this course, students will be able: Solve the Schrödinger equation in two or three dimensions approximately for a range of more realistic problems (such as the Hydrogen atom in weak electromagnetic field) where the system is perturbed weakly.
2. Use these solutions to predict outcomes of measurements done on more realistic quantum systems by calculating transition rates, scattering cross-sections.
3. Be able to use existing symmetries of the system under question, to simplify calculations. Such as finding out whether a certain transition is forbidden etc.
4. Calculate expectation values and probabilities for various observables
5. Describe how a general initial state will evolve with time under various perturbations,
6. Calculate how a simple initial state will evolve with time under specific perturbations.
Course Objective
Teach fundamentals of quantum mechanics at an advanced level (such that the student is able to follow simple research papers)
