Catalog Course Description
The interaction of high energy photons with matter: ionization, bremsstrahlung, Compton scattering, electron-positron pair production, Cerenkov radiation; photon spectra resulting from these processes; nuclear interactions, cosmic rays and their interactions in the atmosphere; dynamics and diffusion of charged particles in magnetic fields, synchrotron radiation, magnetic flux pinning, magnetic diffusion; gases and magnetic fields in the nterstellar medium, acceleartion mechanisms for charged particles, the energy spectra of electrons, protons and nuclei in the Galaxy.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the processes of interaction of photons with matter.
2. 2. Explain the the spectral formation through interaction of photons with matter.
3. 3. Explain their interaction of the cosmic rays in the atmosphere
4. 4. Explain the dynamics of charged particles in strong magnetic fields
5. 5. Explain the synchrotron radiation.
6. 6. Explain the accretion onto the magnetized compact objects and the resultant radiation processes.
